YAMHILL COUNTY INCLUSIVE PROCLAMATION WILL BE RECONSIDERED AFTER “RE WORDING”

Yamhill County Commissioner Mary Starrett called it an answer looking for a problem, Commissioner Casey Kulla proposed an inclusivity proclamation that all people would be welcome to Yamhill County.

Kulla said it was modeled after similar proclamations in Amity, Newberg, and McMinnville.
Starrett said Yamhill County is already very welcoming to all peoples, but she was concerned the wording of this proclamation could open up a legal issues for the county.

In the end, Commissioner Olson was the swing vote and he sided with Starrett, stating that the liability of saying the county will provide services to people was too much for him.

The inclusivity proclamation will be re-written with words like Striving to be, and aspiring to be instead of “will provide” statements. Look for this to come before the commissioners in the near future.
