Evergreen Space Museum looking for donations on “Giving Tuesday”

The Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville has a list of projects looking for donations during “Giving Tuesday”

Operation BLEO:

Operation BLEO (Beyond Low Earth Orbit) is a learning lab on the Aviation Museum’s mezzanine that incorporates different activities in a NASA-style mission. With a media lab, engineering lab, and agricultural center, students participate in a variety of learning techniques meant to inspire and educate about the world of aerospace.

Each year, the Education Department serves an average of 10,000 students through field trips, camps, Homeschool Days, Cultural Days, and other events. Our goal is $1 for every student served. Your donation will go towards updating our technology to run engineering and design programs, as well as fully establishing a classroom, complete with maker spaces and an area for space farming. We have already begun implementing the programing for Operation BLEO – now all we need is the opportunity to grow it!

Year of Apollo:

On December 24, 1958, Apollo 8 sent the first men around the Moon in a mission that paved the way for future exploration. The next years were filled with Apollo missions, including the first lunar landing and NASA’s most successful failure. The museum wants to celebrate these incredible, world-changing feats in three ways: an art gallery inspired by the most iconic photo taken from Apollo 8, Earthrise; a new, interactive exhibit to educate people about the missions; and finally, a weekend-long festival filled with activities, expert talks, and the opportunity for families to experience every aspect of a NASA-style mission. While the festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, the rest will live on in the Space Museum beyond that anniversary.

In July alone, the Education Department serves more than 500 students through summer camps, field trips, and family days. Your donation will go towards ensuring these students, and every visitor afterwards, will have a greater understanding of the cultural context, the risk, and the accomplishments of going to the Moon!

T-28 Restoration and Transportation:

The North American Aviation T-28 Trojan is a piston-engine military trainer aircraft used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950s. Besides its use as a trainer, the T-28 was successfully employed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War. It has continued in civilian use as an aerobatics and Warbird performer. It is powered by a Wright R-1820-86 Cyclone 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, 1,425 horse power!

The Museum’s T-28 Trojan is currently in Arizona and we are wanting to bring it up to the Museum. It is painted in Evergreen colors and want it painted back to its original Navy paint scheme. Our goal is to dismantle and truck it to the Museum. It will be reassembled with a new paint job and could go outside to run the engine for the visitor’s enjoyment! There are many military pilots that started their training in a T-28. Your donation will help make this dream a reality. The cost to complete this project is $19,500.
